4 Gallons of Water PUZZLE!

Suppose you were given one three-gallon-bucket and one five-gallon-bucket. There is also a water tap available for you to fill these buckets with water. You are asked to provide us with an exact amount of 4 gallons of water. You can only use the two buckets and the tap. Can you accomplish this task?

SOLUTION

STEP 1: Fill up the 5 gallon bucket completely and transfer water from the 5 gallon bucket to 3 gallon bucket until the 3 gallon bucket is completely filled with water. Now, we have 3 gallons of water in the 3 gallon bucket and 2 gallons of water in the 5 gallon bucket.

STEP 2: Empty the 3 gallon bucket and transfer the water from the 5 gallon bucket to 3 gallon bucket. Now, we have 2 gallons of water in the 3 gallon bucket. Then, fill up the 5 gallon bucket completely with water.

STEP 3: Transfer water from the 5 gallon bucket to 3 gallon bucket until the 3 gallon bucket is completely filled. Since the 3 gallon bucket was already holding 2 gallons of water, only 1 gallon of water is transferred. This leaves us with 4 gallons of water in the 5 gallon bucket! Then, you can empty the 3 gallon bucket. In the end we have an exact amount of 4 gallons of water! Task accomplished!
